Your hints don’t usually work!
But it was so expensive!
You never thought they’d remember!
Which is exactly why you didn’t get it. Luckily though, if the Destiny’s Child banger ‘Independent Women vol 1’ has taught us anything, it’s to buy loads and loads of things for yourself until you feel strong*. Thanks to the invention of the internet, the sales needn’t reduce us to savages anymore - unless, of course, you’re from Norwich where the allure of the Next sale is apparently still catnip to those more desperate for a bargain than things like dignity or having their bones intact.
And as luck or carefully designed capitalism would have it, the sales comes right after Christmas. It’s that time where reductions are so massive it begs the question whether anything was actually worth the price in the first place. Oh yes, some of the reductions are that minuscule it’s an insult (hi Sisley! You can’t knock £5 off literally everything in your collection that costs £100 and label it a bargain babes) but turns out some aren’t bad at all, and getting them online has the obvious advantage of hoovering leftovers with your free hand and not having to walk around town clutching the store bag emblazoned with the ‘SALE!’ lettering of shame.
The following are things that we deem worth the money even without the saving. That’s Trowel sale sense.
*that’s what the song’s about, right?
NARS POWERMATTE LIP LUSTRE IN PIERS, was £23 now £16
These are very good. I like ‘Shredded’ or ‘Pierce’ in Nars’ range of horrifically named matte colours. Look out next year for ‘Impaled’ or perhaps ‘Disembowled’ or worst of all ‘Kept eating Christmas food even when they knew full well they’d had enough and spontaneously combusted’.
LAURA MERCIER SHADOWS & LIGHTS MINI CAVIAR STICK COLLECTION, was £30 now £21
4 mini eye sticks in lovely soft colours, works out at about a fiver each. That is a bargain for the caviars, which are long lasting and more often than not receive a nice compliment.
DR SEBAUGH SERUM REPAIR, was £172.50 for 50ml now £86.25
I’ve been using this since it showed up in the Liberty advent calendar, and am very impressed. The 20ml costs £69, so for £15 quid more you get twice as much here. A really massive saving, tbf. The Pro Rose de Vie serum is also more than half price.
KIEHLS CREAMY EYE TREATMENT WITH AVOCADO, was £26 for 14ml now £23.40
A pisstake at just 10% off (yes I also do maths) but it’s a good under eye treatment and Kiehls never do sales well. In this instance I’m prepared to make an ‘it’s still a saving’ exception.
OSKIA SKINCARE RENAISSANCE MASK, was £51 now £40.80
I did something unthinkable earlier this year; by having a facial and actually buying one of the products they had used on me (usually I just lie that I’ll think about it / pretend I haven’t been insulted when they tell me I reeeeaaaally could do with a better moisturiser). This made the room smell of a lovely rose bush and I still adore using it.
BENEFIT CHA CHA TINT STAIN, was £52 now £25.50
A nice corally take on the classic Benetint. Lasts ages and is better than half price - cha cha ching!
ESPA NOURISH TREATS SKINCARE GIFT SET, was £35 now £24.50
This pink hair mud is fantastic on its own let alone with the overnight Hydration Therapy & lip treatment.
NARS DUAL INTENSITY EYESHADOW IN ARCTURUS, was £21 now £14.70
I’m calling it now: blue eyeshadow will be massive in 2019.
IGK GET LIT KIT, was £25 now £12.50
Really like IGK even if their branding is a bit ‘migraine in da club’. £12.50 doesn’t normally even cover one of their products let alone 3.
BECCA SHIMMERING SKIN PERFECTOR PRESSED HIGHLIGHTER MACARON KIT, was £40
Been a bit obsessed with these Becca highlighters ever since my 18 year old cousin made it clear having one makes you cool. I’m being facetious - they really are the nuts and I personally like the idea of having the choice of different coloured highlighters.
REN CARE GIFT SET, was £32 now £22
REN is forever lovely, and here we have a day cream, renewal mask & firming beauty shot. This £32 gift set is actually worth £58, so for £22 stick me in some stripes and call me Burglar Beck.
BY TERRY GEM GLOW BRIGHTENING CC SERUM SET, was £65 now £32.50
We definitely haven’t sung the praises of By Terry enough on the Trowel, it’s a lovely brand with a great reputation in the tv industry. These little thingies are more than highlighters, they also have anti ageing properties and and help control blemishes. Put a couple of drops in your foundation to brighten, or simply pat along your cheekbones like a regular highlighter.
